Day 13

Friday, finally. It really feels like time is flying. I had my midterm exam today, and that was so many different types of fun. Luckily it didn’t take that much time to finish, so we had the rest of the time to talk about a lot of different stuff. For example, destiny.

Sometimes you plan on things to happen in your life, but somehow, you end up taking an entirely different path that you never planned on taking. Some call  it fate or destiny, others call it God, and still others will call it the course of life or a coincidence. Whatever you want to call it, I think we can agree that life takes you to surprising places. Looking back at it now, if my dad hadn’t suggested me going to Mexico, right now I would bee in VT working at a special needs camp for the summer.

It is around this time that people are packing up for the summer, and all of my friends have posted on their statuses that they will be at camp this summer, and reading it makes me a little sad. Working at camp was one of the best summers of my life, and I will never forget how it changed everything for me and turned my whole entire world upside down. To sit down and make a decision between studying a language I love and traveling or to stay in the US and still have a great summer working with special needs was probably one of the worst/toughest decisions that I have ever made in my entire life. It is hard sometimes for me to not wonder at times if I made the right decision to give up a job that I love to do another thing that I love. I still think about my campers and my friends who worked the trenches with me every single day. It sounds so cheesy, but sometimes it’s like twisting a knife into my heart if I think about it too much, but I know that I am supposed to be here in Mexico, so I am trying to enjoy it without letting the whatifs take control of my life. If there was a way for me to be in two places at once, I would definitely take advantage. Oh the places you go when you let life take its course.

Tonight was pretty fun, we had a free afternoon, so I took a nap and then went out with the girls. I got to meet a girl who was here last summer and came back to intern this summer. It is a lot easier to talk to someone who has been in your position before and understands your thoughts and feelings. We ended up at this chocolate bar, where everything was delicious, of course. We highly recommend the crepes drenched in chocolate.

A look at the menu

Yes I took the picture because there is an item called Boob (I know this is immature, but I'm okay with that)

Of course, by being abroad here in Mexico, I am starting to realize a few things:
1. It is way easier for me to volunteer abroad than purely study abroad (probably because you really get to know people when you’re in contact with them)
2. Just because I am in another country does not mean that I am okay with taking it easy, in fact my need to have adventures is even greater
3. Sometimes you need to man up and go out to get to know other people on your own accord (otherwise you get lonely)
4. It’s nice to have a map and know a little bit of the language
5. It is way easier to be a guy and wander around than be a girl and wander around
6. The traveling bug is contagious and will not disappear in just one, two or maybe three trips abroad
